Industry Insights: Fashioning the New Normal

Industry Insights is the Design Museum’s talks series aimed at Undergraduate design students, with relevance to many MA courses and related disciplines.

In this event, participants are encouraged to draw on the museum’s Women Fashion Power exhibition as a platform to imagine the future, with insights and revelations from a range of professional perspectives. It asks them, what is the ‘normal’ that you aspire to as a designer?

Today’s (and tomorrow’s) designers must consciously and proactively face different responsibilities to their foremothers and forefathers; disappearing resources, aging populations, international political upheavals and ever-shifting digital frontiers. Fashion is often thought of as the unruly, unserious design industry – the one that didn’t grow up. This perception is unhelpful, but it also presents today’s design students and emergent designers opportunities to herald a new way of talking about fashions of the future and new ways of practicing them.

In response to stories and case studies from industry professionals, event participants are invited to explore ways of defining and designing the responsible, exciting and forward-thinking ‘new normals’ they aspire to through a stimulating peer-led finale.

Provisional speaker line-up: Donna Loveday (Design Museum’s Head of Curatorial), Yemi Awosile (textile designer), Laetitia Wajnapel (international fashion blogger, Mademoiselle Robot), and MA Fashion Futures students (London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London).
