Recap: Tiger, Phil miss cut; Laird leads in Phoenix

Tiger Woods was hoping to bounce back Friday after carding a first-round 73 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He did anything but in Round 2 at TPC Scottsdale.

Woods fired the worst round of his professional career Friday, shooting 11-over 82 to finish 36 holes at 13 over.

“It was not a very good day from the very start until the end, but I fought all day,” said Woods, who will miss his 12th career cut on the PGA Tour and 13th overall cut.

Woods’ short-game troubles continued Friday and Woods restated that he was “caught right in between patterns” and still has “a lot of work to do.” His second-round tally included two birdies, six bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey (at the par-5 15th).

“It’s golf,” Woods said. “We all have days like this. Unfortunately, mine was in a public forum and in a public setting.”

Also missing the cut was Phil Mickelson, whose 76 left him at 3 over, two shots back of the projected cut of 1 over. Play was suspended due to darkness and the second round will be finished early Saturday morning.

Leading at 10 under is Martin Laird, who shot another 66 on Friday and leads rookie Daniel Berger by two shots. Another rookie, Justin Thomas, is another shot back in third.

Martin Laird’s lead is now three shots after his birdie at the par-4 17th. Laird was short of the green off the tee, then pitched to about 7 feet and made the putt.

Update No. 15: 7:26 p.m. ET

Martin Laird takes the outright lead at 9 under after his birdie at the par-5 15th. Now, he has a good chance to move to 10 under after hitting his tee shot to 6 feet at the par-3 16th.

• • •

Update No. 13: 7:16 p.m. ET

Phil Mickelson closes with par at the par-4 18th to card a second-round 5-over 76. That score isn’t as bad as Tiger Woods’ 82, but it still will cause Mickelson to miss the cut. Lefty finishes 36 holes at 3 over. The cut is projected to fall at 1 over.

• • •

Update No. 12: 7 p.m. ET

Daniel Berger has company at 8 under. Martin Laird is 3 under through 14 holes today and is now a co-leader along with Berger.

• • •

Update No. 11: 6:55 p.m. ET

The only time both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson missed a PGA Tour cut in the same event was in 2012 at The Greenbrier Classic. Woods, thanks to his second-round 82, has no chance of making the cut this week and Mickelson, who just lipped out a par putt at the par-4 17th, is now two shots off the projected cut line heading to the par-4 18th, his final hole of the day.

• • •

Update No. 10: 6:42 p.m. ET

After sticking his tee shot to 14 feet at the par-3 16th, Phil Mickelson just misses his birdie. The crowd let out a collective sigh of disappointment after that putt. Mickelson now needs a birdie on one of his last two holes to make the cut, which should fall at 1 over.

• • •

Update No. 9: 6:35 p.m. ET

Phil Mickelson gets back to 2 over with a birdie at the par-5 15th hole. Mickelson now heads to the par-3 16th likely needing to play his final three holes in 1 under to make the cut.

• • •

Update No. 8: 5:57 p.m. ET

Phil Mickelson is now 3 over and two shots below the projected cut line after a bogey at the par-5 13th.

• • •

Update No. 7: 5:45 p.m. ET

Phil Mickelson bogeys the par-3 12th to drop to 2 over and below the projected cut line of 1 over. Now, Mickelson is in some trouble at the par-5 13th – and he’s hitting a shot just yards away from the famous boulder fans moved for Tiger Woods in 1999.

• • •

Update No. 6: 5:17 p.m. ET

Phil Mickelson is still right on the projected cut line at 1 over. Mickelson is 3 over through 10 holes today. And speaking of the cut line, here’s a closer look:

  • Projected cut: 1 over (77 players currently above cut line).
  • Phil Mickelson (1 over), Harris English (even) among those less than three shots above cut line.
  • Robert Allenby (2 over) is in the clubhouse after a second-round 74.
  • Jason Dufner (2 over), Sang-Moon Bae among those just below cut line.

• • •

Update No. 5: 4:54 p.m. ET

Ryan Moore shot 12 shots better than Tiger Woods on the back nine today. Moore birdied the par-4 18th to cap a 4-under 32 opening nine holes. He’s 6 under overall, two shots off the lead.

Moore’s playing competitor Zach Johnson also birdied the 18th, and he’s 7 under overall.

• • •

Update No. 4: 4:19 p.m. ET

Phil Mickelson is currently on the projected cut line at 1 over. He’s 3 over through seven holes today with no birdies. He bogeyed three holes from Nos. 3-6.

Lefty has played this tournament every year since 1991. During that time, he has three wins and has missed the cut on just three occasions.

• • •

Update No. 3: 4:05 p.m. ET

Rickie Fowler just birdied the par-4 sixth to move to 3 under. Check out this eagle he made a few holes ago:

• • •

Update No. 2: 3:59 p.m. ET

Daniel Berger birdies the par-4 18th to take the outright and clubhouse lead at 8 under. He shot 2-under 69 in the second round and now leads Justin Thomas by a shot. Thomas is through 17 holes.

Both Berger and Thomas were playing college golf two years ago, Berger at Florida State and Thomas at Alabama.

• • •

Update No. 1: 2:57 p.m. ET

Justin Thomas now leads outright at 7 under. He’s 3 under through 14 holes today. Also, the former Alabama standout has had some good Friday rounds recently on the PGA Tour. He shot 61 on Friday at the Sony Open and 63 last Friday at the Humana Challenge.

Hole No. 9: Par 4, 453 yards

With one hole left, Tiger needs a birdie to avoid matching the worst pro round of his career (81).

Off the tee: Tiger sprays his tee ball right and into some tree trouble.

Approach shot: Tiger gets his approach shot off, but he’s well short of the green.

Around the green: Tiger’s chip ends up about 10 feet short. He’ll have that for par and to shoot 81.

On the green: Tiger’s par attempt misses. That’s an 82, folks, Tiger’s worst round as a pro.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 11 over thru 18 holes (13 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 8: Par 4, 475 yards

Tiger Woods now needs birdie on each of his last two holes to just shoot 80.

Off the tee: Tiger misses the fairway for the first time on the front nine. He’s in the left rough.

Approach shot: From the rough, Tiger sticks his approach inside of 10 feet.

On the green: Tiger gets the birdie putt to drop.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 10 over thru 17 holes (12 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 7: Par 3, 215 yards

Tiger is back to double digits over par after that last bogey. With three holes left, he’ll need at least one birdie to avoid shooting 81 and equaling his worst PGA Tour score.

Off the tee: Tiger finds the green, but he’ll have about 50 feet left for birdie.

On the green: Three-putt bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 11 over thru 16 holes (13 over for the tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Jordan Spieth chips in for birdie at the seventh hole to move to 4 under.

• • •

Hole No. 6: Par 4, 432 yards

That birdie brings Tiger back to 9 over on the day. Maybe he won’t shoot worse than 81 after all.

Off the tee: Tiger finds the left side of the fairway.

Approach shot: From the fairway, Tiger misses the green left and finds the sand.

Around the green: The short-game troubles continue as Tiger hits long out of the sand and onto the fringe. From 20 feet away, Tiger’s putt from the fringe ends up short.

On the green: Tiger gives a shot right back with bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 10 over thru 15 holes (12 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 5: Par 4, 470 yards

After that double bogey, Tiger is now in last place. His worst PGA Tour round is 81. He’s on pace to shoot worse today.

Off the tee: Well, at least Tiger is finding fairways on the front nine. He hits another here.

Approach shot: Could he make a birdie? Tiger sticks his approach inside of 5 feet.

On the green: Tweet, tweet. Tiger makes his first birdie of the round.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 9 over thru 14 holes (11 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 4: Par 3, 183 yards

Tiger is doing a good job avoiding bogey, but he needs some birdies to avoid shooting in the 80s.

Off the tee: Good line. The distance? Not so much. Tiger sends his tee ball into the gallery.

Around the green: Tiger blades his shot from behind the green and finds the front greenside bunker. He then splashes out to about 20 feet.

On the green: Two-putt double bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 10 over thru 13 holes (12 over for the tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Justin Thomas birdies par-4 17th to join Ryan Palmer in the lead at 8 under.

• • •

Hole No. 3: Par 5, 558 yards

Tiger has gotten off to a solid start on this front nine, hitting both fairways and both greens.

Off the tee: Another nice drive here. That’s his fifth straight fairway hit.

Second and third shots: Tiger goes for the green in two and finds the back fringe. But from 65 feet away, his putt from the fringe is left way short.

On the green: After leaving his putt from the fringe about 15 feet short, Tiger misses the birdie putt and makes another par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 8 over thru 12 holes (10 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 2: Par 4, 442 yards

Still no birdies for Tiger as he pars his opening hole of the front nine.

Off the tee: Another nice drive down the fairway for Tiger.

Approach shot: Tiger hits the green and will have a good look at birdie here.

On the green: From 15 feet, Tiger can’t roll in the birdie putt and settles for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 8 over thru 11 holes (10 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 1: Par 4, 408 yards

Tiger makes the turn having just shot 8-over 44 on the back nine. He hit just three fairways, found only three greens and totaled 14 putts in his first nine holes.

Off the tee: Tiger’s first tee shot on the front nine finds the left part of the fairway.

Approach shot: Tiger finds the front edge of the green and has about 20 feet left for birdie.

On the green: No birdie here for Tiger, but he does make par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 8 over thru 10 holes (10 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 18: Par 4, 442 yards

At 9 over, Tiger is tied for 130th and is only beating Michael Hopper (10 over).

Off the tee: Tiger finds just his third fairway of the round here at the 18th.

Approach shot: From 130 yards out, Tiger hits his wedge a little fat and finds the front greenside bunker.

Around the green: This bunker shot isn’t bad as Tiger blasts out to about 6 feet.

On the green: Tiger has a par putt to shoot 43 on the back nine (his first nine), but he pulls it. Bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 8 over thru 9 holes (10 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 17: Par 4, 332 yards

Tiger avoided further damage with that par save at the 16th. He doesn’t much to lose here at 17th, so why not go for the green off the tee?

Off the tee: Big cut for Tiger, but he misses a little short and right, and will have to hit another pitch shot.

Second shot: Tiger tries to run a 4-iron up the slope and onto the green, but he leaves it short of the putting surface.

Around the green: Let’s try this again. Tiger chips his next shot onto the green, but the ball rolls 5 feet past.

On the green: The par save doesn’t fall and Tiger makes bogey after hitting tee shot 15 yards short of the green.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 7 over thru 8 holes (9 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 16: Par 3, 163 yards

Tiger looks out of sorts and it might get worse here at the raucous par-3 16th hole.

Off the tee: Tiger triggers the boos by hitting his tee ball short and into the front-left greenside bunker.

Around the green: This bunker shot comes out high and ends up well short of the hole.

On the green: From 20 feet, Tiger turns those boos into cheers as he drains the par save.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 6 over thru 7 holes (8 over for the tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Birdies at Nos. 3-4 have pushed Ryan Palmer to 9 under, where he leads by two shots.

• • •

Hole No. 15: Par 5, 553 yards

Tiger is now five shots back of the projected cut line after that double bogey.

Off the tee: From bad to worse, Tiger pulls his tee shot into the water. Splash.

Second and third shots: After dropping about 100 yards from the tee box, Tiger hits his third shot down the fairway.

Fourth shot: Tiger has about 230 yards left for his fourth shot. With long iron, he finds the left greenside bunker.

Around the green: Tiger’s struggles continue as he splashes long out of the sand and finds the rough. He then chunks yet another chip. Finally, he putts from the fringe and gets it close.

On the green: It’s getting hard to keep track of all the strokes, but Tiger taps in for a triple bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 6 over thru 6 holes (8 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 14: Par 4, 490 yards

<!—->

So much for using the 13th hole to get some strokes back. Oh, and the rain is picking up, too.

Off the tee: Tiger goes with driver for the fourth time today and hits his worst tee ball of the day, as well. This one is way left.

Second and third shots: After having to take an unplayable, Tiger hits his third shot just short of the green.

Around the green: Tiger chunks a chip, leaving it about 25 feet shy of the hole.

On the green: No heroics here as Tiger can’t save bogey. Double.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 over thru 5 holes (5 over for the tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Bubba Watson birdies the par-5 13th to tie Ryan Palmer for the lead at 7 under.

• • •

Hole No. 13: Par 5, 558 yards

While Tiger waits to tee off at the 13th, a hole he eagled on Thursday, here is a breakdown of what Tiger needs to improve on courtesy of Adam Schupak.

Off the tee: Tiger hurts his eagle chances by sending this drive left and into the rough, just outside of a fairway bunker.

Second shot: Tiger goes for the green with fairway wood, cutting this one into the green. However, he can’t hold the green and ends up in the rough.

Third shot: Tiger has just a chip, but his struggles in that area continue as he hits it 15 feet or so past the hole.

On the green: The birdie putt doesn’t fall and Tiger walks away with a disappointing par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 4 holes (3 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 12: Par 3, 192 yards

That last hole was a rough one, but it could’ve been worse. Maybe Tiger can translate that made bogey putt into some momentum on the greens.

Off the tee: Tiger hits a nice tee ball here and will have about 15 feet left for birdie.

On the green: The putt doesn’t quite have enough speed as Tiger leaves it short. He then taps in for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 3 holes (3 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 11: Par 4, 472 yards

<!—->

Not a bad start for Tiger, who hit two great shots at No. 10 before missing that birdie.

Off the tee: Tiger selects driver again and misses just right of the fairway. However, he’s up under a tree and might have to punch out.

• Approach shot: Tiger can’t get a full backswing and on top of that he’s going to have to crouch down to try and get a club on this ball. He takes a cut, but tops it about 10 feet.

Third shot: After an unfortunate second shot, Tiger has a better lie here. He’s able to take a normal swing, but flies this one over the green.

Around the green: From the rough, Tiger pitches to about 15 feet. He’ll have that for bogey.

On the green: It’s good. That was a big bogey save for Tiger.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 2 holes (3 over for the tournament)

• • •

Hole No. 10: Par 4, 428 yards

Tiger will start on No. 10 today. He’s wearing a white long-sleeved turtleneck with a grey vest over it along with black pants, a white hat and white shoes. He made par at No. 10 and shot 2-under 34 on the back nine on Thursday.

Off the tee: Tiger Woods goes with driver to begin Round 2 and rips it down the fairway at No. 10.

Approach shot: Tiger finds the green and he’ll have just less than 10 feet for birdie.

On the green: Let’s call it about 8 feet and Tiger just misses the birdie. The ball missed on the left edge and Tiger has to settle for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1 hole (2 over for the tournament)
