Gardeners are familiar with the fragrant annual stocks long popular as a cut flower and available at most florists. However, 'Pillow Talk', a cultivated variety, is longer lived and you can expect to grow this as a biennial or short-lived perennial. From June to September it produces very sweet-scented, waxy-white blossoms, fading to pale pink, which pervade the air all around, above thick rosettes of silvery-grey, strap-shaped foliage. 1½ft (45cm)

Easy to grow, this cottage garden plant has long been popular both for bedding and for providing cut flowers, but above all it is its wonderful Clove-like scent that has endeared it to generations of gardeners.

    Smell divine

    Reviewed by Ruth on

The smell of these is indeed divine. Discovered that you need to plant apart as they won’t grow if all crowded in one pot. It’s taken two years to get blooms, but it’s been worth it. Don’t know why you wouldn’t want them to self seed!
