President Donald Trump on Tuesday continued his furious New Year's Day Twitter rampage, this time targeting presumptive incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
In particular, the president taunted Pelosi for having to deal with the consequences of his government shutdown as her first act as incoming leader of the Democratic House of Representatives.
"Border Security and the Wall 'thing' and Shutdown is not where Nancy Pelosi wanted to start her tenure as Speaker!" the president wrote. "Let’s make a deal?"
Trump has insisted on funding for his proposed border wall as a precondition for reopening the government, but Democrats have insisted that he will get no funding for any wall as part of a deal to end the shutdown.
Politico is reporting that Trump has invited Democrats to meet with him on Wednesday to see if they can hammer out a deal that will reopen the government, marking the first time he's met with them since the government shut down last month.
For the past two years, Trump's Republican Party has controlled both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and at no point during those two years did Trump demand funding for the wall as a precondition to keep the government open.
