As we know, trail running shoes have to be amongst the best running shoes out there. Not only do they need to deliver on the running front, but they also have to protect our feet from difficult terrain, unpredictable weathers and unexpected obstacles.

The Hierro v7 is the latest version of this trail shoe from New Balance, which is said to be their best off-road shoe. We asked our testers to take it out onto the trails to see how it measured up…

Who are these running shoes for?

The Hierro v7s are designed for trail runners who take on a variety of terrains and want to do so in comfort. “I’d say that these are great for beginners and those who cover a lot of miles,” says tester Geri. “They’re not really designed for speed or super-technical trails.”

How do the New Balance Hierro v7 fit?

“They felt like they were made for my feet straight out of the box,” says Geri. “The fit is true to size.”

Are they comfy?

“They are super comfortable,” Geri comments. “The upper of the shoe is made of lightweight mesh which is breathable. The toe box is roomy and has been reinforced to protect the toes. The shoe has a gusseted tongue which means the tongue does not move and stays in place.”

How do the Hierro v7 differ from the Hierro v6 and other previous versions?

The V5 and V6 have had the reputation of being on the heavy side. New Balance focused on reducing the overall weight of the Hierro V7. Just like with the V5 and V6, the shoe still has a Vibram outsole, but the weight of the outsole has been reduced by 20% per cent. Traction has improved due to the lugs being higher.

New Balance Hierro v7 review

“I have loved the Hierro v7 from the moment I opened the box,” says Geri. “They look and feel great. I love the design and how they feel on the feet. They’re light and not clunky. This is a fantastic trail shoe for all distances with amazing traction due to the Fresh Foam X. They have good cushioning and are stable with a simple but effective lacing system making sure your foot stays in place. I have really been impressed with the Hierro 7 and how versatile they are.”

“They are suited for all terrains and even performed well on asphalt. They also did well on both long and short distances. The grip on the shoe is amazing which provides great traction on all surfaces dry and wet.”

Would we recommend the Hierro v7?

“This shoe looks good, performs well and is made of sustainable materials,” says Geri. “This is not a good shoe; it is a great shoe!”
