Brookline No. 2

Cambridge is the most expensive city or town in the Boston area to rent a 1- or a 2-BR apartment, according to real estate site Zumper, which analyzed more than 61,000 active listings in February in 17 municipalities.

Brookline is the second most expensive and Boston proper is the third.

The median rent for a 1-BR in Cambridge in February was $2,300 and the median for a 2-BR was $2,900. The median rent for a 1-BR in Brookline was $2,290 and the median for a 2-BR was $2,700.

In Boston, the figures were $2,250 for a 1-BR and $2,600 for a 2-BR.

Take heart, Cantabrigians: Cambridge’s rents might be the region’s highest, but they’ve also seen some of the steepest declines. See the chart above and the graph below.
